Text Box: Drug Abuse Prevention & Training (ADAPT)
Text Box: Abuse of alcohol, illicit drugs and other substances is inconsistent with Army values and adversely affects military performance, discipline, and readiness. Unfortunately, incidents of alcohol and other substances of abuse do occur in the Iraq theater of operations. Recent CONUS newspaper articles have reported that substance abuse is a significant issue in deployed troops. The implementation of an alcohol and drug abuse prevention program in identified at risk solders will significantly reduce potential substance abuse problems before they jeopardize readiness, productivity, and careers.

TF62 MEDCOM has initiated an in theater Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Training (ADAPT) program to reduce the abuse of alcohol, drugs and other substances in Soldiers deployed in Iraq. The TF62 MEDCOM ADAPT program consists of 12 hours of instruction which focuses on the adverse effects and consequences of alcohol and other drug abuse. The curriculum has been approved and the program endorsed by the Army Center for Substance Abuse Programs (ACSAP) and individual treatment plans will be developed for each participant upon completion of the training. Soldiers who complete the TF62 MEDCOM ADAPT program will still need to be Command referred to an Army Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) counseling center upon re-deployment as per AR 600-85, but will not have to redo the ADAPT sessions.

The TF62 MEDCOM ADAPT program will be available to military personnel who are both self-referred and Command referred. All participant will be required to obtain concurrence of their commander to be enrolled in ADAPT.

The initiation of an ADAPT program is a major step in addressing substance use issues in deployed Soldiers and provides Soldiers and commanders with a previously unavailable resource.
